Church of the Ascension Living Shoreline

Baltimore County, MD

The congregation of Middle River Church of the Ascension has created an environmental stewardship group to beautify their grounds, promote conservation landscaping, and to reduce shoreline erosion into Stansbury Creek. The church’s property is widely used as access to the creek and Middle River by neighbors and visitors. This makes the native plantings visible to many people an serves as a conservation landscaping model to the community.  A demonstration Living Shoreline was also installed to protect against bank erosion created by boat wakes and storm events.
Envirens, with it’s affiliate Ecosystems Recovery Institute, facilitated the planning, design and helped with the planting of the gardens and wetland. Brochures will be created to describe the church grounds to visitors from the community and nearby Marshy Point Nature Center.
